Contrarian

On the wall by my desk I have a whiteboard. On the board are important notes held on with magnets, a few souvenirs and suggestions for Wednesday's Word of the Week. Gary added 'contrarian'. I couldn't find it in any of our dictionaries.

Eventually I was able to confirm his definition is correct. A contrarian is a person who argues against the views of the majority.

As I said, he's completely forgiven me for yesterday's roundabout thing and won't be seeking any seaspray and cold wind based revenge this weekend. Whilst I'm indulging in fantasy, how about winning $500 in this competition?

I know that word all too well. YIKES!

Just a another day at the Cruise Ship Dock. Cool breeze, beautiful turquoise water and a 'free' Blues Concert. Yeah, life on an island in the Caribbean is tough. AND this is a contest i CAN enter.

I know that word too - isn't it strange that it isn't in a dictionary? Hope Gary's head - and the rest of him -has stopping spinning x

Alex, I think it may be more common in US than UK English.

Kitty, anything that annoys spellchecker has to be good, doesn't it?

Thank you, Cowboy.

Diane, I do too but more annoying are words I have come across in the past and that I realise I never really understood.

Nancy, I suspect you might not be the only parent with that thought!

Hurray, Faraweyes I'm glad that I've found you a contest to take your mind of the hardships of living where you do (she says through gritted teeth with hardly a trace of jealousy)

Maybe I need a bigger dictionary, Teresa. (Yes, he's fine now!)

Yep - A new up to date dictionary might be a good thing! Isn't it funny how the English language is an organic, live thing which is always growing and changing. Who would have thought we'd have words like 'blogging' in the dictionary?

I thought that was a made-up word -even though I can be one sometimes!

Sarah Pearson said...

I'm with Rosemary, I thought I'd made that word up :-)

I rushed off to my dictionary, but no, it's not there. Contrary but not contrarian. I wonder why not?

Jessica Bell said...

Made me recite Mary Mary quite contrary in my head ... :o)

Patsy said...

Pat, you're right about the language changing.

Rosemary, I suppose all words were once made up by somebody.

Sarah, you'll have to make up another one now.

Glad it's not just me, Maggie.

Jessica, that Mary was definitely one.
