Writing and subbing

Geekiness wasn't my only writing resolution. Another was 'do more and do it better'. To help keep me on track with this, I've signed up for Write 1, Sub 1. It's pretty much what it sounds like - you write a story every month or week and send it out. In my case, I'm going for weekly and I'll write each piece especially for a particular market or competition. I'm on track so far!

This comp only requires an opening line, so shouldn't take too long -  maybe I can even get ahead of my schedule?

I'd like to write comedy and did make a feeble attempt here - I'm sure you can do better.

A non writing aim is to get away in the van more often. Hopefully we'll make it down to Cornwall again which will be great research for this competition.

  1. Glad you signed up for it! My buddy Milo has been SO successful with it and sold dozens of short stories last year. I know you will be successful as well!

  4. Thanks, Alex. Yeah, I've seen reports of Milo's success - he's working hard and doing well.

L, you might think I'm generous, but you've never been between me and a slice of cake!

I'm going, Kitty! Now you go for that comp. Good luck.

  5. The w1s1 is going from strength to strength. There's lots of great new writers this year. Hoorah.

I like the look of that Cornwall competition. I do love Cornwall. I wonder what kind of thing they're looking for? SF, maybe? Maybe not. Cornwall's got a great tradition of inspiring writers.

  9. Good for you, Patsy. I'm sure you'll keep it up. I just need to keep on top of my goals for this year!

  10. Don't know how you keep finding these unusual competitions - love the Cornwall comp, but sounds like it needs to be a sales pitch more than a story - though not difficult for Cornwall. I was born in Plymouth and sooo miss that area.

  11. You're working well Patsy. A good start to the year. I like your one-liner too.

  12. Deborah, I could easily be wrong, but I don't imagine they'll be expecting a lot of Sci-fi.

Tonja, monthly is much more sensible!

I am full of enthusiasm at the moment, Sarah - just hope I can keep it up.

Good luck with the comps, Diane.

    You can do it, Rosemary.

    Tracy, I agree it's a great area.

    Thanks, Maggie.

  13. Wow, what a challenge - weekly! Weakly is more like my response. But I'd like to use it, like a pedometer, to MAKE me do some bloomin' work now that TheYearFromHell is over (PS I did a million steps in 3 months and lost 19lbs but ... 9 have crept back on since 1 Dec 11. So OFFFFFF I go with the peddy again!
    Thanks Patsy.
PS, i've been a-following you since the beginning of time but my picture doesn't show up, just a blank - why is that and how do I make me an' ma owl appear?

  14. I wanted to sign up for this, but I have so much else on my to-do list right now. I do aim to write 4 new shorts this year & submit. Look forward to reading your future stories.

  15. This looks fantastic. I can't sign up to it right now but I'm following. Thanks for the lead and good luck. I'm sure you'll do brilliantly.

  16. Celia, I can see you both!

    Thanks, Rachel.

P Pax, good luck with your own challenge.

Cheers, Petra. Think it'll be the nudge I need to regularly write new stuff.

  17. Good for you! Thanks again Patsy for the links.
I can't get the W1S1 link to work though for some reason.
I like the Cornwall competition. I had a great long weekend there with hubby last year.

  18. Patsy it's the picture on the 'followers' boxes that won't show up and I don't know why!
I have sent off 2 stories yesterday and more the day before that but I still can't decide whether to pick up the challenge or not ... if I do then I OWE it 2 stories already for first 2 weeks ... oh help ... now, about those follower boxes ... ?

  19. Madeleine, I don't know why it didn't work for you - just tested and it seems OK. If you want to check them out, you can find them under 'blogs I follow' on the left.

Celia - Ah! No sorry, don't know why it doesn't show up there - unless you followed before you had a profile picture? What happens if you try to follow again?

I think if you joined W1S1 they'd probably let you off the first two weeks as you didn't know about it then - or you could opt for the monthly version to start with.

  20. This sounds a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Not sure I'll be able to keep up with the weekly but the monthly might be a good place to start! Thanks for sharing!
