This Morning!

Here's a novel writing competition. The winner will get a free place on a Curtis Brown novel writing course and representation by Curtis Brown. Naturally, as I'm mentioning it, it's free. You only have a short time to get an entry in though, so you'd better start soon. This morning would be a good time.

OK, so this wasn't the view from my window this morning, but this is a fiction competition.

  4. Thanks for this, Patsy. It sounds like a good opportunity.

Some of the small print is a little worrying, though - entrants "hereby waive all moral and similar rights in their entry to the fullest extent possible." and "You further waive any and all rights that you may have in respect of your entry and/or participation against the Promoter and the Prize Provider, including (but not limited to) any rights to take action against the Promoter or the Prize Provider for infringement of any intellectual property rights in such entry and/or participation." You also have to give up the right to complain if they use your work in a way you don't like. I'm not sure that's ideal but the pros probably outweigh the cons.

I do like that the prize entitles Curtis Brown to represent all the rights to the novel "throughout the universe in all media". If I win I will make sure they pull out all the stops to sell the rights to publish my book in Braille on Neptune.

    1. That bit does sound worrying, Dan but they explain they need it so they can use the extract for promotion etc (which could be good for the author) I'm reasonably sure it's just them covering themselves over that than any kind of dodgy rights grab.

If they plan to sell throughout the universe, we'd better include lots ot atmosphere for those planets which don't have any.

    2. I suspect you're right - they seem to be trying to fit it all into a very short timeframe, so the practicalities of checking with each author before making any edits to ensure the extracts can be made suitable for broadcast would be very hard to deal with.

    1. It was our view, Mac - but just for a tea break, not an extended stop.
