What helps?

The Insecure Writer's Support Group is great at making writers realise they're not alone with their insecurities – and for offering help and support.

I'm wondering, what's the most supportive thing that's ever been done or said to you with regard your writing?

For me, it was when Gary and I were discussing what should go on our wedding certificate for our occupations. Although I had a day job at the time, he suggested writer.

  1. That was really nice of him.
I think the support for my book launches from my blogger buddies has been the best.

  2. Supportive loved ones are so important - I get the feeling he's the type to be on stand-by with a cup of tea when things are going badly.

  3. I have to agree with Alex that support from blogging buddies has been the most supportive thing that I've ever experienced.

  4. They said I was a great athletic supporter, not much about writing.

  5. Goodness...where to start? My hubby has always been super supportive. My younger siblings would listen to my stories and ask questions when we lived at home. My friends wanted to hear my stories, and I wanted to hear theirs as far back as elementary. Several teachers encourage my writing. My writing coach during pitch wars was phenomenal. My first editor rocks! My critique partners have been invaluable. Blogging friends, same story. Readers who rave, same deal. I don't know how to boil it down to a single thing, but thank you for prompting me to look back and see all the amazing support along the way.

  6. Whenever I say I'm done, I quit, my husband steps in to tell me to keep going. I've doubted his words, but they keep me going, he also tells me I'm beautiful, but I own a mirror. :)
Still, he's never ever discouraged me - always said I should but more importantly that I could! And he's backed that up with the financial support to make it happen. He's my biggest and best support! Although, the friends I've made online are amazing too! This group especially! The opportunities and advice - priceless!

  8. Hi Patsy,

Gary is obviously a clever man and here's to your writing.

My family barely knows I write. Indeed, the support I've received in regards to my writing has come from the blogging family and of course, Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar!

    That's a good result.

    Gary as in another Gary!

  9. Aww...he's such a good person.

I've seen people snicker at writers. Though I have books under a pen name, my relatives have no idea about it. I didn't want to the butt of people's jokes.

  10. You needed to list your occupation on the wedding certificate? Wow.

Support for me came when someone told me my little internet reporter (I.B. Nosey) was heard about in a publishing house. Also, I get hits at my Feeling Nosey? website from Russia (hmm), and even from the Department of Homeland Security. Which could mean...?
