Just Back?

The Telegraph runs a weekly travel writing competition. They want 'feature articles' of 500 words. The prize is publication in The Daily Telegraph, plus £250 in the foreign currency of your choice. There's also an annual award of £1,000 for the article which is considered best overall.

Did I tell you about the time we went to Dunkirk and, in my search for wildflowers, accidentally wandered into a nuclear power station ... carrying a large camera, no ID and the sort of embarrassment over my almost non existent French which makes me look and sound guilty as soon as I say bonjour?

Well, they should have fenced it off, goofs.

Excellent find, Patsy. The competition as well as the nuclear thing.

Thanks, Patsy. That's a great travel competition! Only 500 words :-) And my heart would have dropped out of my body if I'd ever wandered onto a facility like that by mistake! What an adventure to write about. Conjures up lots of story ideas too.

For some reason I've never entered this - I'll have to check again because it may be because it's only open to UK residents. As for your story, Patsy - you should write it up and enter!! :)

I wasn't scared, but I was a bit concerned we might be in for a lengthy period of questioning.

There were fences in some places, but also roads and paths with no gates ...

There's no telling what I'll stumble upon next!

It might be difficult to make it seem accidental in fiction. Fortunately I managed to do that when it actually happened.

I know of better tourist destinations, Susan!

I know what you mean, Patsy! Inspired by this competition I quickly wrote up a little article for it and then found it's not for overseas entrants! Anyway, I'll see if I can find another market it for it.
