Worth a try?

Harpers Bazaar are running a short story competition. You have up to 2,500 words to write on the theme of 'Liberty'. As usual, for the competitions I mention on this blog, it's free to enter. The prize is publication in the magazine and a couple of nights in a very nice looking hotel in the Yorkshire Dales.

It was foggy when we drove over the Dales, so I don't have photos – but here's a castle that's in the general area.

Talking of getting stories published, one of mine will be in this Sunday's Love Sunday magazine (it comes with The Sunday People newspaper.) I'm hoping that some of those who enjoy it will be enticed to buy my books! Do you think it will work?

I'd have to find a way to get over there first!

I look forward to spending a couple of nights in a Yorkshire Dales hotel. Well done on getting featured in this Sunday's People newspaper supplement.

Another frustrating example of a prize which promises much but may likely cost more than you gain. Two nights bed and breakfast but no meals included and no assistance with travel costs. Which leaves only the ‘glory’ of publication without financial reward. Of course, there is the exposure, and kudos, of being published in Harper’s Bazaar...
I doubt their circulation figures are as large as the Sunday People though. I can see there may be hidden benefits to publicity if chosen carefully as you have done. Here’s hoping this weekend’s publication works well for you. And well done by the way.

@ Alex – Yeah. That is a snag.

@ Gary – It does look a nice place to stay.

@ Bea – Yes, claiming the prize would end up costing money. I don't know, but guess the hotel give the two nights for free to get the publicity, just as the competition winner will have their story published for no fee, but the hope the gredit will do them good in the future. Publicity can be valuable – whether it will be worth it in these cases is probably not something we can know until we give it a try.

Congratulations on the story in the Love Sunday magazine. :-)

As it's in the magazine and not the newspaper, I wonder if ALCS will apply...

@ Chrys – Thank you.

@ Carol – I don't know either. It's worth me asking I think.

@ Kate – I haven't noticed a massive spike in sales, but I wasn't really expecting that. It's just a step in raising awareness.

@ twfu – thanks.

Congratulations on your latest published story. No reason why it won't help - even if it's just getting your name on peoples' radar in the first instance. You know what they say about 'all publicity...'
