Not So Fantastic Plastic

Limnisa are running a writing competition, with a week's writing retreat in Greece (or online tutoring) as the prize. The theme is plastic. Thanks to Alyson Faye for bringing this competition to my attention.

You're probably aware that there's now a lot of plastic in our seas and that this is very bad for the creatures who live there (and ultimately for us). Please, please, please try to reduce your use of plastic, especially 'single use' items, such as lids on take away coffee cups, individual portions of milk and ketchup, drinking straws, plastic cutlery, excessive food wrap in supermarkets ...

  1. From what I've read, the government and packaging people are starting to tackle this. About time.

  2. We recycle what we can. We also snip apart the rings connecting six packs of soda so animals can't get their heads caught in them.

    1. Recycling is good, Alex - re using is even better where that's possible.

  3. Hi Patsy = it's a good idea to have a writing competition around plastic - should get some ideas. I do what I can ... and yes bringing it to our attention is a good idea ... we seem to be absorbing a lot of it - have a good weekend - Hilary

    1. I think becoming aware of a problem has to be the first step towards solving it, Hilary.

  5. That the general public are being made aware of what is happening in our oceans has been a long time coming! I'm a scuba diver, and I've been seeing this for years - particularly in the seas off developing countries. I'm so relieved that people are finally realising that they can do their part to help.

    1. I remember seeing the odd report in the part, Susan, but these gave the impression it was a localised problem, or freak weather conditions brought all the plastic together. It's taken too long for people to realise it happens everywhere and impacts on us all.

  6. What a good idea for a competition. The plastic clogging the oceans needs to be dealt with and we certainly shouldn't be adding more to it xx

  8. Good that the competition focuses on plastic, and that's a topic most agree is a big problem.
